| English abstract | Herbert Spencer Jennings (1868-1947) started his career teaching botany and zoology. In his early works he dealt with the morphology and the taxonomy of protozoa. He was also concerned with the individual behavior, mainly in Paramecium. Jennings was cautious in his research, developed according statistical methods. Later he became interested in the role of natural selection on the variation of the organisms. After developing a series of experiments with paramecia, between 1908 and 1912, he found evidence that natural selection did not take place in “pure lines”. In case of the mixing of “races”, natural selection could only isolate the races that already existed. In this way, it could not create anything new |
| Portuguese abstract | Herbert Spencer Jennings (1868-1947) iniciou sua carreira como professor de botânica e zoologia. Em seus primeiros trabalhos tratou da morfologia e taxonomia de protozoários, preocupando-se também com o comportamento individual principalmente de Paramecium. Jennings era cuidadoso em sua pesquisa que desenvolveu empregando métodos estatísticos. Mais tarde interessou-se pelo papel da seleção natural na variação dos organismos. Após desenvolver uma série de experimentos com paramécius entre 1908 e 1912, encontrou evidências de que a seleção natural não ocorria dentro das “linhagens puras”. Caso ocorresse a mistura de “raças”, a seleção somente isolaria as raças já existentes. Portanto, não criaria nada de novo |
