| English abstract | At all the moments of his explanatory task in the Origin of Species, Darwin is plainly aware of the fact that explaining always depends on a given theoretical view or assumption and, in particular, on the comparison of different views. Comparing the accuracy or far reaching scope of his view with the opposing ones will be one of Darwin’s basic strategies to build and defend his own theory. In this text, I intend to exploit some of the innovative features of Darwin’s strategies to deal with refutations by comparing George Mivart’s objections to Darwin’s theory with Darwin’s answers to them. In order to do so, I will analyze some exemplary cases from Mivart’s criticism and Darwin’s responses in the light of the conceptual framework of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species and Mivart’s On the Genesis of Species, and their argumentative strategies. I aim at showing the nature of their polemical interaction, its structure, the role there played by Darwin’s “innovative” procedures and strategies, and the possible contribution of this polemics to the study of rationality |
| Portuguese abstract | Em todos os momentos da sua tarefa explicativa, Darwin está atento ao fato de que “explicar” sempre depende de uma determinada visão teórica ou suposição e, em particular, da comparação de visões diferentes. Comparar a acuidade e maior alcance de sua visão com a visão adversária será uma das estratégias básicas de Darwin ao construir e defender a sua própria teoria. Neste texto, pretendo explorar algumas das inovadoras características das estratégias de Darwin para lidar com refutações, comparando as objeções de George Mivart à teoria de Darwin com as respostas que Darwin oferece. Para tanto, analisarei alguns casos exemplares da crítica de Mivart e as respostas de Darwin à luz da estrutura conceitual de Darwin na Origem de Espécies e de Mivart na Gênese de Espécies, bem como de suas estratégias argumentativas. Pretendo mostrar a natureza de sua polêmica, de sua estrutura, do papel aí desempenhado pelos procedimentos e estratégias “inovadoras” de Darwin, e da possível contribuição de polêmicas como essa para o estudo de racionalidade |
