| English abstract | Beauty and its consequences on self-representation have major effects on people’s behavior and relations. In this context, plastic surgery becomes, for some people, the solution for a “defective genetics”. In order to investigate its effects on selfesteem, interviews were conducted with six women who underwent plastic surgery within the last two years. Content analysis method was used to analyze the results, and inferences and interpretations were based on psychoanalytic literature. In general, the results indicate that plastic surgery increased self-esteem and selfharmony of participants, healed theirs real or imaginary deformity, and positively altered theirs personal and sexual relations |
| Portuguese abstract | A beleza e suas implicações na representação de si têm grande efeito no comportamento e nas relações dos indivíduos. Neste contexto, a cirurgia plástica estética apresenta-se, para alguns, como a solução para os “defeitos da genética”. Neste estudo, foram realizadas entrevistas com seis mulheres que se submeteram a cirurgia plástica estética há menos de dois anos, a fim de investigar o seu efeito na auto-estima. Para analisar os dados, foi utilizado o método de análise de conteúdo, sendo que o levantamento de inferências e interpretações foi feito sob o referencial psicanalítico. De modo geral, os resultados indicam que a cirurgia plástica aumentou a auto-estima e a harmonia interna das entrevistadas, sanou a sua deformidade física (real ou imaginária) e alterou positivamente suas relações interpessoais e sexuais |
