| Spanish abstract | El artículo indaga en la invocación que la novela De sobremesa de José Asunción Silva hace del mito de la francesa Marie Bashkirtseff. Propone que el secuestro de la voz femenina, ejecutado al principio de la novela, debe verse dentro del contexto de las conflictivas construcciones de lo femenino que se fueron desarrollando en el fin desiècle, a medida que nuevos roles y oportunidades se abrieron para las mujeres. El artículo plantea la necesidad de leer De sobremesa en otra dirección: no necesariamente como un relato de búsqueda del amor o de la identidad –tal como se ha leído tradicionalmente– sino como una novela sobre la persistencia de la enfermedad –la tuberculosis, la histeria– y la relación de ésta con la precariedad de las identificaciones de género, sus negociaciones y excesos |
| English abstract | The article examines the invocation of the mythical Frenchwoman Marie Bashkirtseff in the novel Desobremesa by José Asunción Silva. It proposes that the capture of the feminine voice, an event that occurs at the beginning of the novel, must be viewed in the context of the conflicting constructions of femininity that resulted when new roles and opportunities opened to women at the fin desiècle. The article moves beyond the traditional reading of De sobremesa as a story of the search for love or identity to read it instead as a novel about the persistence of illness –namely, tuberculosis and hysteria– and the relationship between illness and the precariousness of gender identifications, as well as the negotiations and excesses of gender |
