| Spanish abstract | A lo largo de su libro de viaje/autobiografía Peregrinaciones de una paria (1838), Flora Tristán se enfoca en las flaquezas y enfermedades del cuerpo humano para trazar conexiones con las facultades intelectuales y morales. Propone una ética observacional basada en la simpatía y la capacidad de sufrir y, así, el viaje se convierte en una serie de triunfos en los que sufre y reconoce este sufrimiento antes de superarlo a través de la investigación y la escritura. Frente a una sociedad arequipeña obsesionada con el placer y la salud pero condenada a vivir en un lugar sumamente insalubre, la narradora describe (y actúa en) un drama de negación de los dolores y placeres del cuerpo a través del cual establece sus credenciales de autoridad moral y literaria |
| English abstract | Throughout her travel book/autobiography Peregrinations of a Pariah (1838), Flora Tristán focuses on the weaknesses and illnesses of the human body in order to trace connections to the moral and intellectual faculties. She proposes and observational ethic based on sympathy and the capacity to suffer, and the trip thus becomes a series of triumphs in which she suffers and recognizes her suffering before overcoming it through the acts of research and writing. Against the backdrop of an Arequipan society obsessed with pleasure and health but condemned to live in an extremely unhealthy place, the narrator describes (and participates in) a drama of denial of the pains and pleasures of the body through which she establishes her credentials to moral and literary authority |
