| Spanish abstract | Se analiza el significado histórico-jurídico y los aportes del Protocolo al Tratado Antártico sobre Protección del Medioambiente en el devenir de la regulación de la actividad antártica. Se determinan sus principales desafíos y las áreas que exigen un mayor desarrollo normativo. Se destaca la importancia que tuvo la consagración del medioambiente como objeto de protección dentro del Sistema del Tratado Antártico, pero también la necesidad de superar algunos vacíos existentes. El Protocolo ha sido sin duda un hito en la relación del ser humano con la Antártica, pero debe continuar su desarrollo progresivo a fin de enfrentar los nuevos desafíos de hoy y del futuro |
| English abstract | The Environmental Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty’s historical-legal meaning and contribution to the development of the Antarctic activities’ regulations is analyzed. Its main challenges and the areas that need deeper normative development are determined. The importance of the environment’s recognition as an object to be protected by the Antarctic Treaty System is highlighted, but it is also emphasized the need to solve some existing problems. The Protocol has been indubitably a milestone in the relation of the human being with Antarctica, but it must continue it progressive development to front new challenges of today and tomorrow |
