| Spanish abstract | No se puede calificar a Maquiavelo como un filósofo ateo, pues tanto Dios, como la religión, estuvieron presentes en sus obras. Si bien su interpretación de la historia está signada por un marcado secularismo, menciona a Dios en varios textos. A su vez, concibió a la religión como un hecho político. Esta concepción la esbozó al estudiar el papel que cumplió ésta en la Historia de Roma. Así, distinguió un uso de la religión como elemento civilizador, de otro instrumental, donde era manipulada para los fines del Estado. Este último uso fue duramente criticado por pensadores, como Pedro de Ribadeneyra, quien escribió un tratado para anatematizar su doctrina. Asimismo, formuló duras críticas al cristianismo primitivo al contrastarlo con la religión romana, pues, mientras que éste apuntaba al otro mundo, la antigua creencia fortalecía las virtudes cívicas. Por esta razón, concibió una ética basada en los valores de la religión romana. | English abstract | You cannot qualify as an atheist philosopher Maquiavello, as both God and religion, were present in his works. While his interpretation of history is marked by a strong .
