| Spanish abstract | En la literatura reportada sobre actitudes lingüísticas hacia la maya, una que emerge constantemente aborda las variantes conocidas como jach maya y xe'ek' maya. Así, el objetivo del presente estudio es explorar las actitudes lingüísticas en su relación con los imaginarios sobre el tiempo, los espacios y quienes emplean tales variantes, según algunos hablantes de la lengua maya de tres ciudades: Mérida, Cancún y Chetumal. Los conceptos de actitudes e imaginarios son la luz teórica de la investigación. El estudio aplicó la entrevista semidirigida y un cuestionario sociolingüístico, siguiendo un análisis cualitativo e inductivo. Los resultados muestran diferencias significativas entre los habitantes de cada localidad. Una conclusión fundamental es que ambas variantes alimentan la imaginería hacia el idioma y generan actitudes diferenciadas. La inclusión del concepto imaginario al lado de las actitudes permite la identificación de una perspectiva que explica cómo las actitudes lingüísticas están fundadas entre la subjetividad y la objetividad en donde los hablantes exponen sus posturas hacia formas de concebir la lengua maya |
| English abstract | A constant focus in the literature about language attitudes concerning the Maya language refers to two variants known as jach Maya and xe'ek' Maya. The objective of this study is to explore Maya speakers’ language attitudes as related imageries about these variants’ users, time and space of use. Speakers from three cities, Mérida, Cancún, and Chetumal, served as informants. The concepts of attitudes and imageries provide the theoretical framework of the investigation. The study applied a semi-structured interview and a sociolinguistic survey, followed by a qualitative inductive analysis. The results show significant differences between the natives of each city. A fundamental conclusion is that both variants feed into the imagery towards the language and promote differentiated attitudes. The inclusion of imageries as constructs alongside attitudes affords an explanation grounded on both subjectivity and objectivity, where the speakers position themselves vis-à-vis ways of understanding the Maya language |
