English abstract | This article concludes that notions of flexibility and job instability which dominate current labor studies are insufficient to explain the evolution of wage relationships in the Latin American agricultural sector during the last four decades. Recovering such notions is useful and even necessary as referents to establish contrasts and affinities. However, the mechanical adoption of both terms ignores structural, institutional and policy asymmetries between the deployment of industrial capitalism and the late nature of agrarian capitalism in the region. To reach such theoretical proposals, it was necessary to: (a) characterize regional historical processes regarding rural farmers and agrobusinesses; (b) make a comparative analysis supported by case studies for three countries; and (c) reinterpret the empirical evidence |
