| Spanish abstract | La extraordinaria riqueza del Nuevo Reino de Granada —territorio de la actual Colombia— en oro, plata, es - meraldas, amatistas, granates y otros elementos preciosos como las perlas, el carey, la tagua —o marfil vegetal— y el coral favoreció el desarrollo de la orfebrería y su sig - nificativa contribución al arte colonial. Sin embargo, la historia tradicional de la cultura no lo ha reconocido suficientemente, quizás por la atención brindada a otras artes como la pintura, la escultura y la arquitectura. El presente artículo forma parte de una investigación sobre el arte de la platería y su ejercicio en este amplio territorio para rescatar del olvido el valioso trabajo de estos artistas, conocidos en su tiempo como “oribes” y “plateros” |
| English abstract | The extraordinary wealth of the New Kingdom of Grana - da—known today as Colombia—in gold, silver, emeralds, amethysts, garnets, and other precious elements such as pearls, tortoiseshell, tagua (or vegetable ivory), and coral fostered the development of gold- and silversmithing and made a significant contribution to colonial art. However, in traditional history this pursuit has yet to be adequately recognized, perhaps because much more attention has been paid to other art forms such as painting, sculpture, and architecture. The present article, “Gold- and Sil - versmithing in the Province of Popayán”, is part of an investigation on this art and its practice throughout the country and intends to acknowledge the valuable work of the recognized goldsmiths and silversmiths of the time |
