| English abstract | This article intends to present, first, the academic and philosophical controversies that involve the concept of religion. Is it possible to categorize, in a single word, the various religious manifestations existing in the world, that is, to classify them from a single globalizing term? Could Eastern thought, especially Buddhism, be defined as “religion”? Is it possible to frame it within this perspective? Avoiding possible anachronisms, we will try to adapt the Eurocentric concept of religion to the philosophical aspirations of Buddhist doctrine. Therefore, the proposal is to reflect on the concepts and principles that integrate the Buddhist faith, analyzing them in interface with Western culture, in order to deepen the hermeneutic debate between the religious traditions of the West and the East |
| Portuguese abstract | Este artigo pretende apresentar, primeiramente, as controvérsias acadêmicas e filosóficas que envolvem o conceito de religião. Seria possível categorizar, com uma única palavra, as diversas manifestações religiosas existentes no mundo, isto é, classificá-las a partir de um único termo globalizante? O pensamento oriental, sobretudo o budismo, poderia ser definido como “religião”? É possível enquadrá-lo dentro desta perspectiva? Evitando possíveis anacronismos, tentaremos adaptar o conceito eurocêntrico de religião às aspirações filosóficas da doutrina budista. Portanto, a proposta é refletir sobre os conceitos e princípios que integram a fé budista, analisando-os em interface com a cultura ocidental, de modo a aprofundar o debate hermenêutico entre as tradições religiosas do ocidente e do oriente |
