| English abstract | In this paper, through the analysis of a website in which prospective parents argue and ask for suggestions about the name of their children, my intention is to understand the reasons that lead these individuals to opt for names that derive or have traits in their spelling of the English language. It is noticed that these names can be grouped into three different categories: (i) names that come from English-speaking countries and that maintain the spelling of English, (ii) names that are not, but seem to derive from English because of the spelling adopted and (iii) names of English origin that are tailored to the spelling of Portuguese. The analysis points to the fact that choosing a name derived from the English language may be related to the desire to change the status quo. However, by adopting these names for their children, Brazilians transform and transcend the English language, uprooting it from his Americanness and making it a "bastard language adapted to the distortions that the cultures inflict" (Ortiz, 2003, p. 192) |
| Portuguese abstract | Neste artigo, mediante a análise de um website no qual futuros pais discutem e pedem sugestões acerca do nome de seus filhos, busco compreender as razões que levam esses indivíduos a optarem por nomes que derivam ou que possuem em sua grafia traços da língua inglesa. Percebe-se que esses nomes podem ser agrupados em três diferentes categorias: (i) nomes oriundos de países de língua inglesa que mantém a grafia do inglês; (ii) nomes que não são, mas parecem derivar do inglês por conta da ortografia adotada e (iii) nomes de origem inglesa que são adaptados à ortografia do português. A análise aponta para o fato de que a escolha de um nome próprio derivado da língua inglesa pode estar relacionada ao desejo de mudança do status quo. No entanto, ao adotarem esses nomes para seus filhos, brasileiros transformam e transcendem o inglês, desenraizando-o de sua americanidade e tornando-o uma língua "bastarda adaptada às distorções que as culturas lhes infligem" (Ortiz, 2003, p. 192) |
