| English abstract | This paper aims to present a brief history of phonology, branch of linguistics that studies the sound system of a language. The Phonology organizes a systematization of the data provided by Phonetics – phones – as well as selects the mechanisms for establishing the phonemes of a language. It is based on universal principles and applies to a particular language and the theoretical models that describe it. | Portuguese abstract | O presente trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar um breve histórico da Fonologia, ramo da Linguística que estuda o sistema sonoro de um idioma. A Fonologia organiza uma sistematização dos dados fornecidos pela Fonética – os fones –, assim como seleciona os mecanismos para o estabelecimento dos fonemas de uma língua. Fundamenta-se em princípios universais e aplica-se a uma língua particular e aos modelos teóricos que a descrevem.
