| Resumen en inglés | In this study, we expect to bring to light issues related to the social ties between Brazilian and Portuguese people, at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. More specifically, we discuss some identity issues, such as those that originated lusophobia, related to the intolerance and linguistic bias against Portuguese immigrants that were very common in the nineteenth-century Brazilian society. This proposal follows the theoretical assumptions of Variationist Sociolinguistics, in dialogue with History and the Sociology of Language. We support the hypothesis that apart from the widely known ties and affinities between Brazilian and Portuguese people, in the political, social, cultural and economic aspects of the new society, the Portuguese immigrants were included as foreigners and were determined by their language and customs |
| Resumen en portugués | Neste estudo, esperamos recuperar questões a propósito das relações luso-brasileiras, como as delineadas na passagem do século XIX ao XX. Mais especificamente, analisamos alguns aspectos sócio-históricos do antilusitanismo (ou lusofobia), em sua relação com as manifestações de intolerância e preconceito linguísticos contra imigrantes portugueses, muito presentes na sociedade brasileira oitocentista. Com base nos pressupostos teóricos da Sociolinguística Variacionista, em diálogo com História e com a Sociologia da Linguagem, argumentamos que, para além dos propalados laços e afinidades entre Portugal e Brasil, no espaço político, social, cultural e econômico desta nova sociedade, os lusitanos foram incluídos como estrangeiros e discriminados por sua língua e costumes |
