| Spanish abstract | A través de la sistematización de registros etnográficos, notas periodísticas, reportes inter-gubernamentales y datos estadísticos, analizamos cómo personas migrantes provenientes de África y Asia gestionan tanto sus recursos individuales y colectivos como sus marcadores so-ciales de diferencia para sostenerse mientras esperan en Tapachula, frontera sur de México, antes de poder seguir el tránsito hacia la frontera México-EE.UU. Se examinan tres lugares frecuentados por grupos de migrantes transcontinentales. Nuestros hallazgos revelan que el manejo de diferentes lenguas originarias, regionales o aprendidas en el tránsito, así como la conformación de grupos y de redes migratorias transcontinentales facilitan el sostenimiento y eventualmente acotan los tiempos de espera |
| English abstract | By systematizing ethnographic notes, newspaper articles, intergovernmental reports, and offi-cial statistical data, we analyze how migrants from Africa and Asia manage their individual and collective resources as well as their markers of social difference to sustain themselves while waiting in Tapachula, in the southern border of Mexico, before continuing transit towards the Mexico-US border. Three places where groups of transcontinental migrants frequently gather are examined. Our findings reveal that speaking different native or regional African languages, or languages learnt in transit, the constitution of groups in movement, and transcontinental migration networks, allow for subsistence and eventually shorten waiting times |
