English abstract | This essay reviews the methodological affinities, academic contexts, research objectives, and scholarly output of an ethnohistorical school that defines itself by the term "New Philology". In order to define and discuss the particular contributions that the members of this school have made to the ethnohistory of Mesoamerica, this essay posits three phases of development for the school: an initial phase of exploration and innovation (1976-1992), a secondary phase of "branching out" from Nahua etnohistory to other cultural groups within Mesoamerica (1992-2000), and a third, concurrent phase in which the school converges with other interdisciplinary trends in anthropology, linguistics, and art history (1992-...). After identifying himself as a member of this school, the author sketches the major methodological and conceptual topics that define the New Philology as an autonomous school within the field of Americanist etnohistory |
