| Spanish abstract | Este ensayo forma parte de una historia antropológica más amplia de las élites y el privilegio, vinculados al capital y a la clase, al género y la diferencia, en tiempos neoliberales y nacionalistas, plutócratas y populistas. El estudio empezó como una etnografía e historia de una generación de preparatoria, la clase de 1979, en Modern School, una institución mixta que encarna el estatus de élite en el corazón de Nueva Delhi. Desde entonces, este ejercicio se ha expandido para incluir encuentros variados con agentes del poder, desde administradores de fondos y capitalistas clientelistas hasta burócratas, abogados, periodistas y académicos. Considerando las diversas formas de investigar las élites y sus mundos, el esfuerzo exploratorio del estudio se enfoca en representaciones de privilegio, exhibiciones de memoria, proclamaciones de entitlement, economías del afecto y usos del capital, así como sus genealogías presentes. En el contexto de las transiciones del desarrollo poscolonial al capitalismo neoliberal, en el último cuarto del siglo XX, se ofrece una descripción crítica que entrelaza relatos etnográficos, énfasis analíticos y teoría anecdótica. Esto también se refleja en el estilo y la estructura de este ensayo, que entreteje instantáneas sociológicas, relatos cotidianos, viñetas antropológicas y texturas teóricas. |
| English abstract | This essay is part of a broader anthropological history regarding the elites and privilege, linked to capital and class, gender and difference, in neoliberal and nationalist, plutocratic and populist times. The project began as the ethnography and history of a specific high school generation, “the class of 1979,” at the ‘Modern School,’ a co-ed institution that embodies the elite status in the heart of New Delhi. Since then, this study has expanded to include varied encounters with agents of power, from fund managers and their capitalist clientele, to bureaucrats, lawyers, journalists and academics. Considering the various ways of investigating the elites and their worlds, the study’s exploratory effort focuses on representations of privilege, displays of memory, proclamations of entitlement, economies of affect and the uses of capital, along with their present genealogies. In the context of the transitions from postcolonial development to neoliberal capitalism, throughout the final quarter of the 20th Century, a critical account is offered that intertwines ethnographic accounts, analytical emphases and anecdotal theory. This is also reflected in the style and structure of this essay, which weaves together sociological snapshots, everyday stories, anthropological vignettes and theoretical textures. |
