| English abstract | By the end of the ’1930s the British historian and philosopher R. G. Collingwood (1889-1943) presented a defense of Metaphysics against the attacks of Analytic Philosophy. The perspective of positivism, as present in authors such as A. J. Ayer, Bertrand Russell and L. Wittgenstein, involved an attempt to solve the problems of Western intellectual tradition through a linguistic and formal approach. In An Essay on Metaphysics (1940) Collingwood tries to retrieve the pertinence of Metaphysics as an essential philosophical problem by relating it to history and highlighting the idea of absolute presuppositions. | Portuguese abstract | No final da década de 1930, o historiador e filósofo R. G. Collingwood (1889-1943) apresentou uma defesa da Metafísica perante os ataques da Filosofia Analítica. O viés positivista de autores como A. J. Ayer, Bertrand Russell e L. Wittgenstein buscava resolver os problemas da tradição intelectual do Ocidente por meio de uma abordagem mais próxima da lógica formal. Em An Essay on Metaphysics (1940), Collingwood tenta resgatar a pertinência da Metafísica enquanto problema filosófico essencial aproximando-a da História. Além disto, ideias polêmicas como a suspeita com relação ao valor cognitivo da Psicologia vêm à tona, marcando o estilo direto e acessível da linguagem collingwoodiana. Contudo, a noção emblemática do ensaio sobre a Metafísica de Collingwood é a ideia de pressuposições absolutas.
