| Resumen en español | En el siguiente artículo se presenta una reflexión sobre las relaciones entre ensayo, humanismo y humanidades. Se procura caracterizar cada uno de estos términos a partir de una breve revisión de su etimología y su historia, así como también reparar en el estrecho vínculo que los une. Se detiene en particular en la figura de Miguel de Montaigne, ensayista y humanista, cuyo legado se considera de enorme actualidad. Se propone meditar sobre los alcances de la declaración de buena fe con que se abre la advertencia ''Al lector''. El trabajo se cierra con la interpretación de uno de los grandes temas tratados por Montaigne en sus Ensayos: el miedo, cuyas derivas individuales y sociales se hacen sentir en nuestros días de una manera renovada, como lo muestran ejemplos eminentes de la literatura contemporánea. | Resumen en inglés | This article reflects upon the relationships among the essay, humanism and the humanities. It seeks to characterize each of these concepts in terms of their etymology and history, as well as to highlight their bond. There is a focus on Michael de Montaigne, essayist and humanist whose legacy is considered highly topical. It is proposed to meditate on the scope of the statement in good faith with the warning open ''To the reader''. This work closes with the interpretation of fear, one of the greatest topics addressed by Montaigne in his essays, and whose individual and social drifting is being felt today in a renewed way.
