| Spanish abstract | Las teorías de la conservación desarrolladas durante el siglo veinte no surgen en un escenario simple donde sólo se han discutido temas patrimoniales. Por el contrario, la consolidación y evolución de estas teorías ha coexistido con los proyectos de las vanguardias de la modernidad. En este artículo se analiza entonces, la relación existente entre las teorías de la conservación de ciudades e inmuebles históricos y las vanguardias arquitectónicas, desde inicios del siglo veinte hasta hoy. El objetivo fundamental es mostrar el influjo que las diversas visiones del porvenir preconizadas por el movimiento moderno y, más adelante, por otras corrientes revisionistas, han ejercido en la conformación del cuerpo teórico y de ciertos conceptos instrumentales que orientan el quehacer patrimonial en general, tanto a nivel urbano como edilicio. De esta manera, son examinados los juicios de valor que giran en torno a la ciudad antigua y a los monumentos arquitectónicos enunciados en diversos momentos del siglo pasado, tanto por los especialistas dedicados a la conservación, como por los arquitectos y urbanistas más preocupados por la creación de nuevos paradigmas. | English abstract | The conservation and restoration theories of the twentieth century did not appear in a simple scenario as the only subject of discussion among patrimonial issues. By the contrary, the consolidation and evolution of these theories coexisted with the vanguard modern movement ideas. In this paper, I examine the relationship between conservation theories about ancient cities and historic buildings and the architectural vanguard, from the first decade of twentieth century until present days. The main purpose is to show how the influence of multiple visions of the future, foreseen by thinkers of the modern movement and, afterwards, other revisionists, had a significant role in the conformation of the corpus teoricus and instrumental concepts that orient the patrimonial practice in present days. Concepts of values about the topics of historic cities and monuments are examined, which emerged in different moments of the previous century, linked to the theoretical activity of conservation specialists, architects and urban planners concerned with the development of new paradigms. Besides, I analyze their contradictory relationship. This controversial state of affairs came to a change only after World War II, when both, conservation theory and functionalist modern concepts were reviewed from a critical perspective.
