| English abstract | The aim of this article is to analyze the practice of lobola or “bridewealth” by the zulu people in South Africa like a “gateway” through which they negotiate theirs forms of belonging to a home/family. This negotiation is held by the way the number of cows – 11 – that shapes the lobola is reached in a complex arithmetic game. I conclude that the partial payment of lobola or even its absence gives rise to forms of belonging and an ontology very different of the one reached for a “fully loboled” woman. In turn, this difference cannot be understood through the current idea of illegitimacy of the children produced outside the marriage |
| Portuguese abstract | O lobola ou o “preço da noiva” praticado pelos zulus na África do Sul é analisado aqui como um “portal” através do qual as pessoas negociam as suas formas de pertencimento a uma casa/família. A negociação ocorre a partir da especulação sobre a complexa aritmética que forma o número 11 de vacas do lobola. Concluo que o “pagamento” parcial do lobola ou a sua ausência desencadeia noções de pertencimento e uma ontologia distintas daquelas observadas nos casos em que uma mulher é “fully loboled” [totalmente lobolada]. Tal distinção, porém, não corresponde à ideia de ilegitimidade de filhos produzidos fora do casamento |
