| Spanish abstract | En la Ciudad de México del siglo xix, los paseos se convirtieron en lugares de gran importancia en la vida cotidiana de los nuevos ciudadanos libres. En ellos se reunía la gente con propósitos de socializar, ver y ser vistos, exhibir sus atuendos y carruajes que indicaban su nivel social, y de respirar aire limpio. Ahí se ubicaron fuentes y esculturas con fines menos inocentes que el simple ornato. En este artículo se interpretarán los elementos iconográficos que conformaban la Fuente de Guerrero, construida en el Paseo de Bucareli en 1830, con la finalidad de mostrar un uso más de estos lugares: como un escenario de las ideas políticas de quienes sustentaban el poder en ese momento |
| English abstract | In Mexico City, during the nineteenth century, the promenades became places of great importance in the daily lives of the now free citizens. People gathered with the purposes to socialize, to see and be seen, to show off their fancy clothing and their carriages, which indicated their social status, to walk and breathe clean air. Fountains and sculptures were erected there for more than just ornamental purposes. In this essay, the iconographic elements that made up the Fuente de Guerrero, built in 1830 on Bucareli Avenue, are interpreted with the goal of showing another use of these type of spaces: as a scene to manifest the political ideas of those in power at the time |
