| Spanish abstract | En este ensayo se presenta una reflexión sobre las imágenes antiurbanas presentes en las letras de Pearl Jam, planteando algunas interpretaciones sobre las letras escogidas en tanto registros culturales de una época particularmente interesante en la historia de Estados Unidos y de sus ciudades. La hipótesis que guiará este trabajo plantea que gran parte de la crítica de Pearl Jam a la ciudad proviene, por un lado, de su condición de portavoces de la llamada Generación X, mientras que por otro, podríamos encontrar en este discurso elementos atribuibles a corrientes intelectuales como la Ilustración, el Romanticismo o el materialismo marxista. | English abstract | This essay presents itself as a reflection about the anti-urban images arising from the lyrics of Pearl Jam. These images raise some interpretations chosen on the basis of cultural records of an epoch particularly interesting in the history of U.S and its cities. The leading hypothesis in this work suggests that an important part of Pearl Jam's criticism to the city comes, on one hand, from their position as spokesmen of the so called X Generation, while on the other, we could find in their discourse some elements ascribable to intellectual currents like the Illustration, the Romanticism or the Marxist Materialism. It is between these poles that the analysis will consequently be situated |
