| Spanish abstract | En la segunda mitad del siglo XX, años después de que el estudio de la ciudad se constituyera en “ciencia urbana” armada sobre modelos organicistas, mecanicistas o funcionalistas, van a aparecer nuevos enfoques que iluminan desde otros ángulos el problema urbano. En este panorama renovador resulta significativa la aparición de un texto crucial en la interpretación del hecho urbano, Las ciudades invisibles del escritor Italo Calvino, texto que llamativamente no proviene de la especificidad disciplinar. En Las ciudades invisibles se expresa la imposibilidad de fundar cualquier conocimiento sobre la ciudad fuera de la significación: “El ojo no ve cosas sino figuras de cosas que significan otras cosas”. El propio título da la clave: la invisibilidad de la ciudad |
| English abstract | During the second half of the 20th century, years after that the study of the city became “urban science” built upon mechanics or functionalist models, new approaches that illuminate from different perspectives the urban question have appeared. In this reviving scenario the apparition of a crucial text in the interpretation of the urban phenomenon, Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities, is very significant, but remarkably, it does not come from the disciplinary sphere. In Invisible Cities the impossibility of basing any knowledge of the city outside signification is expressed: “The eye does not see things but shapes of things that mean other things”.
