| Spanish abstract | Este trabajo explora la importancia que reviste el contraste entre lisonjería y habla franca en El Señor Presidente de Miguel Ángel Asturias. Para ello, parte por abordar la adulación en la novela como un pernicioso fenómeno político que, por una parte, le confiere legitimidad al régimen dictatorial problematizado en la obra y que, por otra, sirve para desestimar las posibles críticas que se le formulen al gobierno autocrático. Posteriormente, se evidencia que la forma que adquiere en la obra el castigo del vicio en cuestión -por medio de Miguel Cara de Ángel- evoca el suplicio que reciben en la Divina comedia los aduladores, que se hallan en el Malebolge sumergidos en estiércol. Finalmente, nuestro planteamiento se complementa con la idea de que la lisonjería es contrastada y superada en la novela por la franqueza y el coraje del estudiante. Se concluye que, por medio de la condena del servilismo y la adulación, y la exaltación del coraje y del habla franca, El Señor Presidente respalda los valores y comportamientos políticos vinculados al proceso democrático impulsado en el marco de la llamada "Revolución de octubre" |
| English abstract | This paper explores the relevance of contrasting flattery to frankness within El Señor Presidente by Miguel Ángel Asturias. In order to do so, the paper begins by addressing flattery within the novel as a harmful political phenomenon that, on the one hand, legitimates the discussed dictatorial regime in the text and, and, on the other, serves to dismiss the possible criticism against the autocratic regime. It becomes evident later that the shape the punishment of flattery takes within the novel -through Miguel Cara de Ángel- recalls the torment experienced by flatterers in the Divine Comedy, who are sunk in manure in Malebolge. The proposal, finally, matches the idea that flattery is both contrasted and overcome within the novel through the frankness and bravery of the student. I then conclude that, by rebuking obsequiousness and flattery as well as by honouring bravery and frankness, El Señor Presidente backs the values and political behaviours linked to the democratic process promoted within the Guatemalan Revolution |
