| Spanish abstract | La creciente circulación de reproducciones de obras de arte en Chile a comienzos del siglo XX encontró un importante vehículo de difusión en las revistas culturales, que evidenciaron el impacto de una serie de transformaciones tecnológicas en la producción de estas imágenes, y expandieron notablemente los repertorios artísticos en el ámbito de la cultura impresa. Este artículo analiza las formas en que revista Selecta (1909-1912) seleccionó y organizó sus contenidos artísticos, prestando especial atención a la multiplicidad de usos y espacios destinados a reproducciones de obras de arte, los criterios de selección de estas imágenes y estrategias a través de las cuales buscó modelar o responder a los intereses del público lector. Si bien la revista amplió el conocimiento sobre artistas europeos antiguos, una revisión más detenida de los contenidos de los artículos e imágenes publicados durante sus años de funcionamiento revela que Selecta abrió en realidad un significativo espacio a contenidos de actualidad, permitiendo a sus lectores el acceso a diferentes asuntos vinculados a las artes, y a artistas y obras contemporáneos hasta entonces poco conocidos en el contexto local |
| English abstract | The increasing circulation of reproductions of works of art in Chile in the early twentieth century found an important vehicle of dissemination in cultural magazines that provided evidence of the impact of a number of technological transformations in the production of these images, and notably expanded the artistic repertoires in the realm of print culture. This article analyzes the ways in which Selecta magazine (1909-1912) chose and organized its artistic content, paying particular attention to the multiplicity of uses and spaces intended for reproductions of works of art, the criteria for the selection of those images, and strategies through which the magazine sought to shape or respond to its readers' interest. Although the magazine broadened the reader's knowledge of old masters' artworks, a closer examination of the articles' content and images published during the period the magazine was published, reveals that Selecta actually opened up a significant space for current artistic affairs, allowing its readers to access information on a variety of artistic matters, and contemporary artworks and artists until then little known in the local context |
