| Spanish abstract | El presente artículo aborda la práctica funeraria de restos humanos cubiertos de cinabrio que se localizaron en el montículo 2 del sitio arqueológico El Zapotal, Veracruz. De entre los más de doscientos entierros encontrados en este sitio, se reconoce la jerarquía de cuatro individuos en los cuales se observa dicho tratamiento. Se argumenta sobre el simbolismo que proyectan estos personajes pintados de rojo cinabrio en un espacio dedicado precisamente a la representación cosmogónica del ciclo de vida después de la muerte |
| English abstract | In this article we consider the funerary practice of covering human remains with cinnabar as seen in Mound 2 at the archaeological site of El Zapotal, Veracruz. Among the more than 200 burials found at this site, we note the hierarchy of four individuals who received this treatment. We discuss the symbolism of the bodies painted cinnabar red in relation to a space dedicated precisely to the cosmogonic representation of the cycle of life after death |
