| Spanish abstract | En la abundante literatura dedicada a los juegos de pelota prehispánicos, se encuentran muchas hipótesis que tienden a transformarse en afirmaciones. En este artículo examinemos cinco temas que merecen estudios más rigurosos, sin querer polemizar. ¿Existió el tlachtli entre los olmecas y en Teotihuacán? ¿Cuántos juegos de pelota distintos se practicaron en Mesoaméri-ca? ¿Qué significado tiene la orientación de las canchas? ¿Existió un patrón arquitectónico de las canchas, a pesar de sus diferencias obvias? Las respuestas a esas preguntas pueden abrir nuevas pistas para investigar y entender mejor acerca de este rasgo característico del área cultural |
| English abstract | In the extant literature on the pre-Hispanic ballgame, numerous hypotheses have rapidly become affirmations. In this article, we examine five aspects that require more rigorous study. Did the tlachtli (ballgame) exist in Olmec and Teotihuacan civilizations? How many different games existed in Mesoamerica? What can a precise study of ballcourt orientation contribute to our understanding? Were there regularities in ballcourt construction, in spite of their diversity? The answers to these questions can open new paths of investigation for a better understanding of this characteristic feature of the cultural area |
