| Spanish abstract | Los Códigos de Policía son instrumentos de orden y control de la ciudad y su población; se trata de un orden que conjuga lo físico de la urbe, su morfología, higiene y embellecimiento con ideas de moral, religiosas y de orden público. Este intricado tejido de competencias se conoce como “ciencia de policía” o de buen gobierno, con acento en el quehacer cotidiano. | English abstract | The police regulations are instruments of order and control of the city and its people; an order that imbued the physical spaces of the city, its morphology, hygiene and embellishment with ideas of a moral, religious and civic public order. This intricate fabric of diverse controls is known as “police science” of good government with the stress on the daily chores. This article briefly reviews the antecedents of this science in the European Illustration, in 19th century Venezuela and, especially, its manifestation and management in the city of Mérida |
