| English abstract | The ways of using earth to build have points of contact with other systems and techniques such as bricks, stone and reinforced concrete. However, as the uses of natural materials are scarcely known, we intend to put forward some explanations in this article. Earth has been present in Architecture since the first human building manifestations and occurs in almost any region of warm or temperate climate and is less present in cold weather places. The materials available and the form of expression of different cultures gave raise to a variety of building techniques that use only earth or combine it with other animal, vegetal or mineral materials. Taking all these varieties, the majority of which is still in use, it is possible to make a general classification that allows us to explore its characteristics, advantages and inconveniences. For such purpose, we have divided these kinds of construction into three groups: rammed earth, wattle and daub and brickwork. Therefore, we will analyze these systems according to the three mentioned groups, adding some other applications of earth either as the main component or as a complement of other materials. We will look over the main advantages and inconveniences of earth architecture in each of the systems. At the end we include a basic bibliography to enhance further knowledge of the theme |
| Portuguese abstract | La forma de trabajar la tierra en la construcción tiene puntos de contacto con otros sistemas y técnicas del ladrillo, la piedra y el hormigón. Pero, por no conocerse suficientemente lo que se puede hacer con los materiales naturales, queremos acá hacer algunas explicaciones. La tierra en la arquitectura está presente desde las primeras manifestaciones constructivas del hombre y tiene lugar en casi todas las regiones de clima cálido y templado, con una incidencia algo menor en lugares fríos. Los materiales disponibles y las formas de expresión de las distintas culturas generaron diversas técnicas constructivas que emplearon tierra con exclusividad o en combinación con otros materiales de procedencia animal, vegetal y mineral. De todas las variedades que se han dado, la mayoría de las cuales continúa en vigencia, podemos hacer una clasificación general que nos permitirá el estudio de sus características, ventajas e inconvenientes. Para eso hemos dividido este tipo de construcciones en tres grandes grupos: tierra apisonada, tierra con entramado y albañilería. Analizaremos entonces los sistemas según los tres grupos citados, agregando otras disposiciones donde actúa la tierra, sea como principal componente, sea como complemento de otros materiales. Pasaremos revista a las principales ventajas y a los inconvenientes de la arquitectura de tierra y a cada uno de los sistemas. A ello agregaremos una bibliografía básica que ayudará a profundizar en el asunto |
