| Spanish abstract | El siguiente trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar y reconstruir la postura de John Stuart Mill respecto del carácter inductivo e hipotético de las leyes fundamentales de la geometría en su obra A System of Logic . En el primer apartado, mostraremos que la finalidad de esta obra es entregar un texto antagonista a la extendida doctrina alemana, a saber, the a priori school . Mill defenderá la tesis de que todo saber humano se funda y justifica en la experiencia, intentando derrotar al apriorismo en su fuero más fuerte: el conocimiento matemático. En el segundo y tercer apartados, plantearemos la crítica que efectúa Mill a aquella tradición que sostiene que las proposiciones geométricas son analí - ticas y que las definiciones que las constituyen refieren a conceptos perfectos. En el cuarto y quinto apartados, explicaremos de qué naturaleza son los primeros principios sobre los cuales se funda la geometría. En el transcurso de estos apartados, nos abocaremos a exa - minar las consecuencias de la inclusión del elemento hipotético en geometría y veremos que, a pesar de su crítica, Mill intentará preservar su estatus de ciencia confiable y de resultados verdaderos |
| English abstract | The article aims to analyse and reconstruct the position of John Stuart Mill of the inductive and hypothetical characters of the primitive laws of geometry in his A System of Logic . In the first section, it will be shown that the purpose of this work is to give an antagonist view to the extended German doctrine, namely, the a priori school . Mill will defend the thesis that human knowledge is both founded and justified by experience, by trying to defeat the apriorism in its strongest immunity: the mathematical knowledge. In the second and third sections, Mill’s criticism is against that tradition that says that geometric propositions are analytics and their definitions contain perfect concepts. In the fourth and fifth sections, we are to explain the nature of the principles on which geometry is founded. During this development we will focus on the consequences of including the hypothetical aspect in geometry and we shall see that Mill, despite its criticism, intends to maintain the status of geometry as a reliable and true science |
