Spanish abstract En este artículo se propone una secuencia de las ocupaciones humanas prehispánicas en la región Sicarigua-Los Arangues, noroeste de Venezuela. La secuencia se inicia en el siglo IV A.C. y se prolonga hasta el momento de la conquista española en el siglo XVI D.C. Durante este largo período se producen cambios notables en los estilos cerámicos, las formas de asentamiento, las costumbres funerarias y las estrategias de subsistencia. Los resultados preliminares aquí presentados forman parte un proyecto de arqueología regional cuyo objetivo final es evaluar los indicadores arqueológicos que podrían sustentar el posible surgimiento de cacicazgos en la región entre 1000 y 1500 D.C
English abstract In this article a sequence for the pre-Hispanic human occupations in the region Sicarigua-Los Arangues, northwestern Venezuela is proposed. The sequence begins in the fourth century B.C. and extends until the moment of the Spanish conquest in the sixteenth century A.D. During this long period remarkable changes are observed in the ceramic styles, settlement patterns, human burials and subsistence strategies. The preliminary results presented here are the outcome of a project of regional archaeology whose final goal is to evaluate the archaeological indicators that could support the possible appearance of chiefdoms in the region between 1000 and 1500 A.D
