| Spanish abstract | RESUMEN Las proteínas óseas morfogenéticas son un conjunto de citocinas con efectos pleiotrópicos que pertenecen a la superfamilia del factor de crecimiento transformante beta. Sus implicaciones en ortopedia se hicieron importantes a partir de las investigaciones de Marshall Urist, al descubrir su capacidad de osteoinducción. El desarrollo posterior de su clonación permitió su investigación sobre la regeneración y reparación de lesiones óseas. Este documento revisa brevemente los conceptos fundamentales sobre su síntesis fisiológica, estructura molecular, clasificación, propiedades bioquímicas y efectos sobre el sistema musculoesquelético. También trata los principios de la tecnología involucrada en su producción industrial como insumos de salud empleados en la cirugía de reconstrucción biológica en ortopedia |
| English abstract | ABSTRACT Bone morphogenetic proteins are a group of cytokines with pleiotropic effects that belong to the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily. Their implications in orthopedic surgery became important because of their osteoinductive properties noted first by Marshall Urist, and later, with the development of cloned proteins and their potential clinical applications in bone healing. This document will review in brief the basic concepts about their physiologic synthesis, molecular structure, classification, biochemical properties and effects on the musculoskeletal system, but also, the technology involved in their industrial production as health goods applied as biologic reconstruction devices in orthopedic surgery |
