Spanish abstract Objetivo. Conocer las características sociodemográficas y de atención obstétrica de la partera tradicional en el estado de Veracruz, México. Métodos. Se realizó un estudio transversal a parteras tradicionales registradas y activas, en los Servicios de Salud de Veracruz, durante 2002. Resultados. De 1224 parteras entrevistadas la edad promedio fue de 57 años (±13 años), ubicándose el 87% entre los 40 y 79 años de edad. El 7.3% eran monolingües indígenas y el 25.7% bilingües al español, predominando el náhuatl. El 48.8% eran analfabetas, con frecuencia incrementada en los grupos de mayor edad. Predominó el aprendizaje autodidacta de la partería (44.9%), la atención del parto en la casa de la paciente (79%), en cama (80.4%) y en posición acostada (86.8%). En el pre-parto el 88.4% manifestaron actividades que garantizaban la higiene de manos; y el 80.8% cortar el cordón umbilical con tijera. Otorgan cuidados maternos posparto entre 1 y 42 días y recomiendan la ambulación y la lactancia materna temprana. El riesgo de malas prácticas durante el parto se vio relacionado al analfabetismo (OR; 3.18, IC95%,1.69-6.28), aprendizaje autodidacta (OR; 2.40, IC95%,1.32-4.48) y la falta de capacitación (OR; 2.67, IC95%,1.47-4.79). Discusión. El presente estudio delinea con cierta precisión el perfil sociodemográfico y cultural de la partera tradicional en el estado de Veracruz, así como importantes prácticas relacionadas a la atención obstétrica, que contrastan con resultados observados en otros estudios, lo cual permitirá contar con elementos locales de juicio para la implementación de estrategias de intervención, para la capacitación y mejora continua de las actividades relacionadas en salud materna y perinatal
English abstract Objective. To Know the sociodemographic characteristics and the obstetric attention of the traditional midwife in the State of Veracruz, México. Method: A survey was conducted, from cross/sectional to traditional, enrolled and active midwife, in the services of health of Veracruz, during 2002. Results: Of 1224 interviewed midwives whose average age was 57 years old ( 13 years), 87% of them between 40 and 79 years old, 7.3% of them were monolinguals indigenous and 25.7% of them were bilinguals (Spanish- indigenous languages) mainly Náhuatl. 48.8 % of them were illiterate, this frequently increased in elders. Self-learning of the midwifery predominated (44.9%), delivery at the patient´s house (79%), on bed (80.4%), and lying down (86.8%). Before delivery 88.4% of the midwives did activities which showed that their hands were clean; and the 80.8% of them cut the umbilical cord using scissors. Mother care after delivery was given from 1 to 42 days and they adviced the ambulatory and the early breast feeding. Risk due to non proper handle during delivery was related to illiteracy (OR; 3. 18, IC95%, 1.69-6.28), self-learning (OR; 2.40, IC95%, 1.32-4.48) and the lack of training (OR; 2.67, IC95%, 1.47-4.79). Discussion. This study gives with some accuracy the sociodemographic and cultural profile of the traditional midwives from the State of Veracruz, as well as important activities related to the obstetric attention, which contrast with the results seen in other studies, this will allow to have judgment local elements for the establishment of intervention strategies, for the training and the continuing improvement of the activities related to perinatal and mother health
