| English abstract | This paper deals with the hypothesis of a lexical-semantic determination in syntax, presenting a verbal class which hasn’t yet been studied in Brazilian Portuguese, the so called “reciprocal verbs”. Based on current literature, the motivation for the hypothesis is discussed and in turn it is presented a description of the reciprocal verbs by identifying both syntactic and semantic properties that are relevant for grouping these verbs together. The paper aims, on the hand, to confi rm the hypothesis and, on the other, to explore it by pondering on the nature of the lexical-semantic information that is relevant to syntax |
| Portuguese abstract | Neste artigo, lidamos com a hipótese da determinação semântico-lexical sobre a sintaxe, apresentando uma classe verbal ainda inexplorada no PB – os verbos recíprocos. Discutimos, baseados na literatura, a motivação para a formulação de tal hipótese e apresentamos uma descrição dos verbos recíprocos, identifi cando que propriedades sintáticas e semânticas são relevantes para o agrupamento desses verbos em uma classe. Buscamos, de um lado, corroborar a hipótese, mostrando a sua pertinência no estudo das alternâncias verbais no PB e, de outro, explorá-la, refl etindo sobre a natureza das informações semânticas presentes no léxico que são relevantes para a estruturação sintática |
