| English abstract | This paper brings a study ON the history of science. It points out, by means of a case study that an approach to the history of science implicitly hinges on the historian’s view on how science is conceived. This is a paper on historiography, which means how historians use methodological skills and tools to develop their art, that is, to write on the history of science. It is discussed the paper “Newton and the pipes of pan” (MCGUIRE; RATTANSI, 1966), that studies the possible influence of classic Greco-roman knowledge in the Newtonian doctrine. An attentive historical inquiry of 17th century natural philosophy reveals the possible influence of several Neo-Platonist ideas on the period. The paper also endeavours to show some elements of the mythical philosophy described by Newton. Not intending to be exhaustive, we will approach just some aspects of the new historiography of the history of science. These aspects can contribute to a better use of history and philosophy of science in science teaching, especially on teacher training courses |
| Portuguese abstract | Este artigo apresenta um estudo SOBRE a história da ciência. Discute-se, por meio de um exemplo, a influência que o trabalho do historiador da ciência pode receber de sua concepção sobre a construção da ciência. Tratase assim da historiografia, o modo como o especialista utiliza seus instrumentos metodológicos para escrever sobre a história da ciência. Analisamos o artigo “Newton e as flautas de Pã” (MCGUIRE e RATTANSI, 1966), que estuda a possível influência de conhecimentos da Antigüidade clássica na elaboração da doutrina newtoniana. Sem a pretensão de ser exaustivo, abordam-se apenas alguns aspectos historiográficos da história da ciência. Entendemos que conhecêlos pode contribuir para a utilização da história e filosofia da ciência no ensino de ciências, especialmente na formação inicial e continuada de professores |
