| Spanish abstract | En el Buenos Aires de los años 80 el virus del VIH fue catalogado como “la peste rosa” y calificado por la Iglesia como “un justo castigo divino”, mientras que el estigma recayó sobre las y los enfermos. La presente investigación cualitativa estudia el impacto del VIH/SIDA en el underground porteño y los modos en que las y los artistas lidiaron colectivamente con el virus y con la muerte joven ante la ausencia de una cura. Estas aproximaciones nos permiten dar cuenta del carácter singular de los velorios celebratorios que se llevaron a cabo en la comunidad artística porteña. A través del caso del actor Batato Barea, indagaremos en los sentidos atribuidos a estos rituales fúnebres por parte de sus amistades y allegados. Además, analizaremos la impronta de estos rituales que buscaban preservar la integridad anímica y reivindicar modos diferenciales de vivir. Ambos rasgos resultan distintivos respecto de otros modos colectivos de enfrentar la muerte en los funerales del grupo activista ACT-UP, realizados en Estados Unidos y Europa |
| English abstract | In 1980s Buenos Aires, the HIV/AIDS virus was called “the pink plague” and qualified by the Church as “a just divine punishment”, while the stigma fell on the sick. This qualitative research investigates the impact of HIV/AIDS on the Buenos Aires underground and the ways in which artists collectively dealt with the virus and with young death, in the absence of a cure. These approaches allow us to account for the singular character of the celebratory wakes that took place in the face of the AIDS crisis within the Buenos Aires artistic community. Through the case of the actor Batato Barea, we will investigate the meanings attributed to these funeral rituals by his friends and relatives. In addition, we will analyze the characteristic imprint of these rituals that sought to preserve the effective integrity and to vindicate different ways of living. Both features are distinctive with respect to other collective ways of facing death in the funerals of the activist group ACT-UP, carried out in the United States and Europe |
