English abstract The 19th century saw transformations in the place attributed to Africans within Brazilian society, such as thoserelated to the laws thatrepressed the Atlantic slave trade and the rising view of a civilization based on European values. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to explore how Africans were represented in the statistics produced during this period. Statistics are here understood by its etymological meaning, as a science applied by nation states to obtain a synoptic reading of its resources through mathematical language. The analysis includes local censuses from the colonial period, the proposed 1852 census, the Census of the Court (Rio de Janeiro, 1870), and the General Census of 1872, observing in each of these cases, how classification criteria (especially those of color/race, social condition and nationality) established places in which Africans could be registered in  19th century Brazil
AbstractThe 19th century saw transformations in the place attributed to Africans within Brazilian society, such as thoserelated to the laws thatrepressed the Atlantic slave trade and the rising view of a civilization based on European values.
