| English abstract | This paper examines some conflicts between freedmen and their former owners in Bahia in the months following the abolition of slavery on May 13th, 1888. Some of these conflicts arose from the actions of former slave masters who refused to release their former slaves from captivity, in defiance of the law. Other conflicts are related to actions attributed to those who were emancipated by the Law of May 13th, including the looting and burning of plantations. The tensions that emerged around freedmen and the question of emancipation are interpreted as the expression of different expectations generated by the unconditional and sudden abolition of slavery. They are also understood as part of the disputes over the meaning of freedom in post-abolition Bahia |
| Portuguese abstract | Este artigo é o estudo de algumas experiências de conflitos envolvendo exsenhores e libertos na Bahia, nos meses imediatamente posteriores à abolição. Os conflitos discutidos aqui dizem respeito à resistência de alguns ex-senhores baianos à aprovação da Lei de 13 de Maio de 1888 – e resultante tentativa de manter os libertos num lugar de sujeição – e a algumas ações atribuídas aos “13 de maio”, como roubos e incêndios em plantações. As tensões em torno dos libertos e das questões de liberdade são vistas como expressão das diferentes expectativas que a abolição imediata e incondicional gerou e interpretadas como parte das disputas em torno da definição do significado da liberdade |
