| English abstract | On January 8-9, 1873, two slaveowners in Campos dos Goytacazes, in northern Rio de Janeiro province, were murdered by their slaves. The case aroused fears of a great upheaval, forcing the dispatch of police troops from the Court to the city of Campos. As a result of their trial, the defendants were sentenced to death penalty within the strict provisions of the June 10 1835 law. The purpose of this article is to analyze the inquiry and the bureaucratic papers created by these two murder cases, seeking to deepen the knowledge about the conception of the slaves’ plans, their goals and relationship with the context of general abolitionist politics in the 1870s. It is also important to analyze the knowledge that the slaves had about the repressive structure of the state and how this knowledge influenced the organization of their own rebellious attitude |
| Portuguese abstract | Nos dias 8 e 9 de janeiro de 1873 dois senhores de Campos dos Goytacazes, nonorte fluminense, foram assassinados por seus escravos. Os casos despertaramna época temores de uma grande agitação cativa, forçando o envio de tropaspoliciais da Corte para a cidade de Campos e a condenação dos réus nas rígidasdisposições da lei de 10 de junho de 1835. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar adocumentação judicial e burocrática gerada por esses dois casos de assassinato,buscando aprofundar o conhecimento sobre a organização do plano dos escravos,dos seus objetivos e de sua relação com o contexto emancipacionista da décadade 1870. Interessa ainda analisar o conhecimento que os cativos tinham da estruturarepressiva do Estado e como tal saber influenciou na própria organizaçãode seus movimentos rebeldes |
