Portuguese abstract With Japan’s unconditional defeat in 1945, the nation lost a colonial empire scattered over Asia. This study intends to analyze one of the victims of that same empire: the colonizers themselves. Faced with an army and a state that has ruled out the possibility of repatriation, the so-called Zanryu-Hojin were abruptly forced to adapt - not always successfully - into local postwar society. With the imposition of exile, the consequences were tremendous. This paper seeks to understand the strategies of resistance utilized by this displaced group and its adaptation to the local context. The paper also examines the government policies regarding repatriation (or its postponement) and the assistance rendered in loco (if any) during the returnee’s adaptation to Japan. After the end of exile with a return to the “homeland”, are these ‘Japanese-Chinese’ recognized as full members of the Japanese nation by the government and by society? Or have they - and their Chinese families - simply been relegated to another form of exile, perpetuating their ‘exilic’ existence?
