| English abstract | This paper discusses the precariousness of freedom by focusing on the experience of those men and women who appealed to court in 18th-Century Rio de Contas (Bahia, Brazil). The frontier between freedom and slavery is known to have been thin at the time, and manumission, a prerogative of each slave master. Nonethe-less, enslaved and freed people resorted to the courts in order to solve conflicts concerning manumission and the guarantee of freedom. This study is therefore aimed at understanding under which circumstances this process took place, who the plaintiffs were and how lawyers engaged in such civil suits supported their demands for freedom |
| Portuguese abstract | O artigo discute a precariedade da liberdade por meio da experiência de homens e mulheres que recorreram à Justiça na vila de Rio de Contas no Século XVIII. Sabe-se que as fronteiras entre escravidão e liberdade eram tênues e que a prerrogativa de alforriar cabia a cada senhor. Ainda assim, escravos e libertos apelaram à Justiça a fim de resolver conflitos em torno da alforria e manutenção da liberdade, e interessa aqui entender em que circunstâncias isto se dava, quem eram os sujeitos que a ela apelavam, e como os advogados envolvidos nessas causas de liberdade respaldaram suas defesas |
