| English abstract | Rhotacism is a shifting process among liquid, lateral and rhotic consonants, in the environment of complex onset as, for example, the subs titution of plan for pran. It is an ancient and productive phenomenon in the Portuguese language, tr aditionally described as the categorical change of a lateral sound by a rhotic one. However, the results of an acoustic analysis of the phenomenon shows that there are three variants in its usage and not just the tap one, besides the occurrence of lateralized rhotics, intermediate sounds to lateralized and rhotic ones, alre ady observed in other languages. The analysis of the phonetic details relevant to the realizationt of rhot acism, provided by the acoustic analysis of their occurrence, proves its gradient pattern |
| Portuguese abstract | O rotacismo é um processo de alternância entre as consoantes líquidas, lateral e rótico, no ambiente de ataque complexo, como a realização de ‘plano’ ou ‘prano’. É um fenômeno antigo e produtivo na língua portuguesa tradicionalmente descrito como a troca categórica de um som lateral por um tepe. No entanto, os resultados de uma análise acústica do fe nômeno mostram a ocorrência de três variantes róticas em sua realização e não apenas do tepe, além da ocorrê ncia de róticos lateralizados , sons intermediários aos laterais e róticos já observados em outras línguas. O exame dos detalhes fonéticos pertinentes à realização do rotacismo, propiciado pela análise acústica de suas ocorrências, atesta o seu caráter gradiente |
