| Spanish abstract | Con una baja incidencia, el hallazgo relativamente reciente de que el síndrome Smith-Lemli-Opitz es causado por un trastorno del metabolismo del colesterol, le acrecienta su interés como expresión de un nuevo camino para el mejor conocimiento de los síndromes monogénicos con malformaciones múltiples. Se presenta el caso de un lactante de seis meses de edad que cumple con los criterios que permiten el diagnóstico clínico de este síndrome. Se realiza la descripción dismorfológica detallada del caso y se diferencia del síndrome Smith-Lemli-Opitz tipo II. En la actualidad no existe un tratamiento con probada efectividad para los pacientes con este síndrome; la administración suplementaria de colesterol en la dieta constituye una perspectiva terapéutica lógica pues con ello se deben incrementar, potencialmente, sus niveles plasmáticos y tisulares |
| English abstract | With a low incidence, the relatively recent finding that the Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome is caused by a disorder of cholesterol metabolism, increases its interest as an expression of a new path for better knowledge of monogenic syndromes with multiple malformations. It presents the case of a six month old infant who fullfil the criteria that allow the clinical diagnosis of this syndrome. The detailed dysmorphological description of the case is made and it differs from the Smith-Lemli-Opitz type II syndrome. At present there is no treatment with proven effectiveness for patients with this syndrome; the supplementary administration of cholesterol in the diet constitutes a logical therapeutic perspective, as this should potentially increase their plasma and tissue levels |
