English abstract The value of international partnerships between educational institutions and between educational institutions and other institutions is clear. Often, however, the challenges facing planners are daunting, including institutional impediments, language barriers, and cultural differences. Different individuals and groups play essential roles in overcoming these challenges. These roles include: idea champions, administrators and faculty, and beneficiaries of the partnerships. This paper illustrates and describes these roles as they exist in the international program at the State University of New York at Potsdam. Guidelines for those who serve in each role are drawn from published campus documents, student experiences, and other educational and research partnerships. These principles can be applied to educational partnerships between Mexico, the U.S., and other nations
