Resumen en inglés | This article aims at presenting an introductory study of the Kinikinau Indians, focusing on historical and cultural aspects which brought the language to its present state of obsolescence and the people in danger of extinction. Kinikinau is an Aruak language. This indigenous people is a Chané subgroup (Guaná), like the Terena, to whom they are linguistically and culturally similar. Throughout almost the whole of the twentieth century they were thought to be extinct. There are no specific studies of this group nor of the language, but it is known that the latter differs little from the Terena language. Due to their history marked by oppression from the Guaicuru and by ethnocide originating from cruel land politics in Mato Grosso, the population almost became extinct, the language gave way to the dominant language and today is found to be in an accelerated process of extinction. The total population is around 180 Indians, of which only 11 speak the language |
