| Resumen en español | El propósito de este trabajo es hacer un análisis de las circunstancias que rodearon la fundación y el desarrollo del Instituto Juárez de Tabasco. El artículo intenta mostrar la compleja situación que enfrentó este establecimiento educativo desde su creación en 1879 hasta las primeras décadas del siglo XX y el impacto que esto tuvo tanto en su oferta educativa como en su planta académica. Las principales variables que contextualizaron el desarrollo institucional fueron la difícil situación financiera, el cierre y apertura de sus carreras, la insuficiencia de matrícula, la débil organización de su cuerpo de profesores y la inestabilidad política estatal. A pesar de esto, el Instituto Juárez logra mantenerse y consolidarse como la principal opción educativa a nivel preparatoria y profesional en la entidad, hecho que aunado a un nuevo proceso de reforma hacen posible su ascenso como universidad hacia finales de los años cincuenta |
| Resumen en inglés | This paper analyzes the circumstances surrounding the founding and development of the Instituto Juárez de Tabasco. It seeks to show the complex situation in which the educational establishment was involved from its inception in 1879 to the early decades of the 20th century, and the impact this had on its educational provision and academic staff. The main variables framing its institutional development were the difficult financial situation, the closing and opening of its teaching departments, insufficient enrolment, the weak organization of its body of professors and unstable state politics. Despite these obstacles, the Instituto Juárez managed to remain open and establish itself as the state's main educational option at high school and professional level, which, together with a new process of reform, enabled it to rise as a university in the late 1950s |
