| Resumen en inglés | The work analyses the historical evolution of the concept of complex numbers, since when they were first needed in the mathematical context until their eventual formalization and acceptance. The main analysis comprises the Middle Ages, that is, the beginning of European Renaissance and the transition from feudalism to capitalism, a fruitful cultural period that influenced Philosophy, Arts and Sciences as well as Mathematics. The article will make a "journey" since the Sumerians" clay tablets, some 3.700 years ago, until the fractal generators of the present time, showing the mathematicians" reserve in accepting them, as it had occurred with negative numbers. Today the theory of complex numbers is applied in technology, sciences, arts and nature. |
| Resumen en portugués | O trabalho trata da evolução histórica do conceito de números complexos, do surgimento de sua necessidade no contexto matemático até sua formalização e aceitação. A análise principal repousa na Idade Moderna, ou seja, o início do Renascimento europeu e a transição do feudalismo para o capitalismo, fértil período cultural que influenciou filosofia, artes e ciências, inclusive a matemática. O artigo fará uma "viagem" desde as tábuas de argila dos sumérios, há cerca de 3.700 anos, até os geradores de fractais da atualidade, mostrando o receio de matemáticos em aceitá-los, semelhantemente ao que ocorreu com os números negativos. A teoria dos números complexos aplica-se, hoje, à tecnologia, às ciências, às artes e à natureza. |
