| Resumen en inglés | Count Joseph Athur de Gobineau and Alexis de Tocqueville shared a discomfort regarding the changes in post-revolutionary French society. Both were highly critical of the emerging individualistic and massified society of the period and were nostalgic of the aristocratic values the French Revolutin had sought to erase. Such affinities, however, did not cause Tocqueville and Gobineau to converge in their opinions. In fact, they disagreed starkly on how to interpret the past and imagine the future of France and humankind in general. This essay deals with the diverging worldviews and the social responsibility of those who choose history as a science to convey meaning to the past, forge identities in the present, and design the future. |
| Resumen en portugués | O conde Joseph Arthur de Gobineau e Alexis de Tocqueville partilhavam de desconforto frente às mudanças ocorridas na sociedade francesa pós-revolucionária. Ambos eram críticos à sociedade massificada e individualista que emergia. Mostravam-se saudosos de valores aristocráticos que a Revolução francesa pretendeu apagar. Tais afinidades, contudo, não faziam com que Tocqueville e Gobineau convergissem em suas visões de mundo. Muito pelo contrário, discordavam frontalmente quanto à interpretação do passado e às projeções futuras sobre a França ou sobre a humanidade em geral. Este ensaio trata das visões de mundo diferenciadas e da responsabilidade social daqueles que optam pela história como ciência para significar o passado, construir determinada identidade no presente e projetar um futuro. |
