| Resumen en inglés | This article analyzes how the natives of Valledupar define their own speech. In theoretical terms, this study embraces the sociolinguistic three-component mentalist model through an exploratory study with a mixed approach that follows the direct method. The results reveal that the speakers consider that Spanish is spoken cantao in Valledupar and, on the other hand, they consider that the Spanish spoken in Valledupar is more prestigious than other variants in the region and, in addition, they recognize some linguistic variations in the city |
| Resumen en español | Este artículo analiza cómo definen los nativos de Valledupar su habla propia. En términos teóricos, este estudio acoge el modelo mentalista de tres componentes sociolingüísticos por medio de un estudio exploratorio con enfoque mixto que sigue el método directo. Los resultados revelan que los hablantes consideran que en Valledupar se habla cantao y, por otra parte, consideran que el español hablado en Valledupar es más prestigioso que el de otras variaciones de la región y, además, reconocen fenómenos de variación lingüística en la ciudad. |
